Since 1993 the European Herbal & Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA), bringing together the major UK herbal registers, has been working towards improved regulation of herbal medicine in the UK. The aim has been to set certain common standards while promoting the development of each herbal tradition.

The EHTPA has agreed and published Standards of Proficiency for Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners, a common-core curriculum together with specific curricula for the Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions, and has established an Accreditation Board to assess training standards.
